Pictorial Highlights of Missouri History

Available exclusively from Historic City of Jefferson

Pictorial History of Jefferson City

In the early 1930’s Wallace McDougall created these pen and ink drawings depicting Missouri history for the purpose of syndication through newspapers. As reference he used the lunette oil paintings in the Capitol as well as portraits, old prints, photos and engravings.

Originally the New Day Press in Jefferson City owned the drawings and planned to publish them as a series in 52 segments on a weekly basis for a year. However, only about half of these were eventually published when the owner of New Day Press died and the business closed. Historic City of Jefferson has made the Pictorial History available in its entirety.

Pictorial History with Lewis and Clark

The drawings and text are essentially unchanged from the original drawings. Each strip is titled, numbered and signed by McDougall. Publication in tabloid form was chosen for the more readable and fun oversize “comic book” look as well as economy.

These pictorial histories are a collection of unique visual stories covering 200 years of Missouri history. Having been written before the political correctness of today, the reader will note that perceptions of our Native Indians presented in these history vignettes are different than today’s perceptions. This reflects the attitude of those days and in itself is an Interesting glimpse into the general social conventions of the 1930s.

Hopefully this pictorial highlight will help and encourage students to discover some of the major events that have shaped our government and life style and perhaps pique the interests to further study Missouri’s rich history.
