Local Legendary Lawmen of the 70's
Mark Schrieber

Sure, the Cole county lawmen of the seventies might not look as colorful as the those depicted above. But they had the same grit as the old timers.

Mark making his case...
Historian Mark Schreiber entertained an audience of about 50 HCJ members in the Division One Courtroom of the Cole County Courthouse on Aug. 15 with a program entitled, “Legendary Lawmen of the 70s.” Schreiber, who worked in law enforcement in various capacities in the 1970s related colorful tales about working with Sherriff Wyman Bassinger, Judge James Riley, Warden Donald Wyrick, Prosecutor and later Judge Jim McHenry, and many others.
Current Judge Jon Beetem was among the spectators at this event. He sat in the jury box with other attendees as the crowd flowed over from the main gallery. At the conclusion of Schreiber’s talk, Chamber of Commerce President Randy Allen provided an update to HCJ members on the strategic planning process that is going on now in the community. He had asked for time to brief HCJ members on this important topic.

A serious moment ...

Not so serious!
